Medical Cannabis in Philadelphia, PA
Medical Marijuana
Over the years, more and more patients are discovering the benefits of alternative medicine, with many turning to Medical Cannabis to help treat numerous types of medical conditions. Medical Cannabis, also referred to as Medical Marijuana, refers to the use of marijuana plants or its derivatives in the treatment of these medical conditions. While research on Medical Marijuana is ongoing, there are a vast number of benefits to its use in treating these conditions.
Treatments
Pain relief
Medical Marijuana is commonly used for pain management, especially in chronic conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain. The cannabinoids in marijuana, particularly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), have analgesic properties that can help alleviate pain and improve the quality of life for many patients and can be a much safer alternative to opioids.
Muscle spasm control
Medical Marijuana has shown effectiveness in reducing muscle spasms and tremors, making it beneficial for conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injuries.
Nausea and vomiting reduction
Marijuana can help reduce nausea and vomiting, particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with conditions like HIV/AIDS. It can increase appetite and prevent weight loss in such cases.
Neuroprotective properties
Some studies suggest that cannabinoids found in marijuana may have neuroprotective properties, which means they could help protect the brain from damage caused by conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. However, continued research is needed in this area.
Anti-inflammatory effects
Cannabis contains compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, such as CBD. These properties may be beneficial in managing conditions characterized by inflammation, such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Crohn’s disease. It has been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of flair-ups.
Epilepsy management
It also has shown promise in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures in certain forms of epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which are resistant to traditional antiepileptic drugs.
Mental health disorders
Some individuals with mental health conditions, including anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), have reported benefits from medical cannabis use. CBD, in particular, has been studied for its potential anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects.
Glaucoma treatment
Marijuana can help reduce intraocular pressure, which is beneficial for patients with glaucoma. However, its effects are temporary, and other treatments are typically preferred for long-term management of this condition.
